4 beneficial apps for family caregivers

Wouldn't it be great to receive a helping hand at any given moment?

For family caregivers, support is always accepted and cherished, but what if the assistance was accessible on demand? Technology has found a way to make many of life's tasks easier and more convenient for everyone. We have discovered a few that can help to benefit family caregivers in particular. Here are four to consider downloading:

1. CareZone
Do you often have a hard time keeping up with your family member's doctor's appointments? Do you find it difficult to remember when your loved one's prescription needs a refill or are you constantly scrambling through stacks of paper to find important contacts?  If so, consider downloading CareZone. Available for both Apple and Android devices, this app helps you keep all critical medical documents, appointment reminders and medical contacts in order.  You can fill out information during your loved one's clinical visits with the mobile journal, keep track of important appointments in the calendar and organize all doctors, pharmacies and insurance providers in the contact list.

In addition, any family member that needs to be involved can download the app as well and request access to share and receive information about your loved one. With this feature, everyone is on the same page, and can easily be kept accountable by one another.

2. Lotsa Helping Hands
The Lotsa Helping Hands is also one that allows you to share information with family and friends to help coordinate assistance easier. The shared calendar feature reduces the chance of overlap and keeps everyone up-to-date with schedule changes. According to AARP, this app is one of the best for caregivers who provide care with a close group of individuals.

Aside from a shared agenda that gives volunteers the opportunity to offer their time in certain activities, Lotsa Helping Hands lets you post announcements, notes and photos to share with your community. There's also a communication feature that allows you to chat with those connected and send words of encouragement during a shift.

3. Care/Mind
If you don't already have a Fitbit device, this app will make you seriously think about getting one. With this app, you have the ability to transfer information from the device, which will then enable you to always have real-time updates on your loved one's health and well-being with the Care/Mind app. Features include:

  • Heart rate monitoring - If your loved one's heart rate increases or decreases because of medications, activity or a condition, you'll see it on the dashboard.
  • Activity updates - Keep track of how often he or she is walking and working out to ensure overall health.
  • Sleep pattern tracking - Receive last night's sleep pattern data, which lets you know if he or she is getting enough rest.

With this app, you can adjust the settings so that you are able receive alerts when your loved one's heart rate is concerning, when sleep patterns deviate, or if he or she is dedicating enough time to physical activity.

The great thing about this app in particular, is that you can save all of this information and take it to the doctor's office each time you visit.  This  provides the nurse or physician more insight for certain situations.

4. Pacifica
As a family caregiver, you know that taking care of your own health and well-being is extremely important for you to be able to do your job well. Unfortunately, self-care can lag if it is not made a priority. With Pacifica, you'll have the ability to conveniently take of taking care of yourself right in the palm of your hand. This app allows you to track your mood and mental health as well as receive aid for anxiety, stress and depression relief.

Write down your thoughts in the diary feature to keep track of patterns that may trigger anxiety. Come up with daily goals to tackle that will help to provide a sense of self-worth and accomplishment.
